math calculations with syrup (1)

Calculate the total quantity and the total days supply for the following Rx:
Periactin 2mg/5mL
3 cc po qhs
disp: 6 oz
------------------------------------------------------------
The doctor has prescribed Periactin syrup, but this brand-name drug has been discontinued.
In turn, the pharmacist will have to dispense the generic version Cyproheptadine syrup.
The doctor wants the pharmacist to dispense 6 fluid ounces.
We know that 1 oz = 30 mL and then 6 oz = 180 mL
The total quantity to be dispensed is 180mL as stated by the doctor.
The sig says: take 3 mL by mouth at bedtime
The total days supply will be 180 divided by 3 which is 60 days.
What are the total quantity and the total days supply for the following Rx:
Rondec DM 4oz
1/2 tsp po qid
------------------------------------------------------------
The doctor has prescribed Rondec DM syrup, but most pharmacists will dispense either Ceron DM syrup or C-Phen DM syrup.
The doctor wants the pharmacist to dispense 4 oz, that is, 4 fluid ounces.
We know that 1 oz = 30 mL and then 4 oz = 120 mL
Then, the total quantity to be dispensed is 120 mL
The sig says: take 1/2 teaspoonful by mouth four times daily
We know that 1 teaspoon = 5 mL and then 1/2 teaspoon = 2.5 mL
In turn, the patient will take 2.5 mL four times daily, that is, 2.5 * 4 = 10 mL per day.
The total days supply will be 120 divided by 10 which is 12 days.
Calculate the total quantity and the total days supply for the following Rx:
C-Phen DM 4oz
1 tsp qid
------------------------------------------------------------
We know that 4 ounces = 120 mL
The total quantity to be dispensed is 120mL as stated by the doctor.
The pharmacist has to choose either C-Phen DM drops 30mL or C-Phen DM syrup.
In this case, the pharmacist will choose C-Phen DM syrup because the doctor has prescribed 4oz, that is, 120mL
But, some pharmacists may dispense Ceron DM syrup.
The sig says: take 1 teaspoonful by mouth four times daily
The patient will take 5 mL four times daily, that is, 5 * 4 which is 20 mL
So, the patient will be taking 20 mL per day.
The total days supply will be 120 divided by 20 which is 6 days.
What are the total quantity and the total days supply for the following Rx:
Lactulose 30 mL q6h prn
disp: 500 mL
------------------------------------------------------------
The doctor has prescribed Lactulose syrup.
The total quantity to be dispensed is 500mL as stated by the doctor.
The sig says: take 30 mL by mouth every six hours as needed
The patient will be taking 30 mL four times daily, that is, 120 mL daily.
The total days supply will be 500 divided by 120 which is 4 days.
Calculate the total quantity and the total days supply for the following Rx:
Prelone 15mg/5mL
2.5 cc po bid x 5 days
------------------------------------------------------------
The doctor has prescribed Prelone 15mg/5mL syrup, but the pharmacist may very likely dispense the generic version prednisolone 15mg/5mL syrup.
The total days supply is 5 days as stated by the doctor.
The sig says: take 2.5 mL by mouth twice daily for 5 days
The patient will take 2.5 * 2 * 5 which is 25 mL
So, the total quantity to be dispensed is 25 mL
It is worth noting that prednisolone syrup is not exactly the same as prednisolone solution. In other words, they have the same therapeutic effect, but syrup and solution are two different dosage forms.
What are the total quantity and the total days supply on the following Rx:
Albuterol 2mg/5mL syrup; #16 oz; Sig: 1 Q4-6H PRN WH
------------------------------------------------------------
The sig says: take one teaspoonful by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed for wheezing
Now, we need to know how much medication the patient takes daily.
The most medication the patient may take is one teaspoonful every 4 hours, that is, the patient can take one teaspoonful six times daily.
Since 1 tsp equals 5 mL, the patient can take 5mL * 6 which is 30mL daily.
So, the patient may take up to 30 mL per day.
The doctor wants the pharmacist to dispense 16oz, but we need to convert 16oz to milliliters (mL)
1 oz = 30 mL and then 16 oz = 480 mL
So, the total quantity to be dispensed is 480 mL as stated by the doctor.
The total days supply will be 480 mL divided by 30 mL which is 16 days.
What are the total quantity and the total days supply on the following Rx:
Codeine-Guaifenesin
240 mL
2 tsp q 4 h prn
------------------------------------------------------------
The doctor has prescribed the combination of Guaifenesin and Codeine, which are the active ingredients of the following four drugs:
Cheratussin AC, Robitussin AC, Guiatuss AC, and Guaifenesin AC
The pharmacist may dispense any of these four drugs, but the pharmacist will very likely dispense Cheratussin AC syrup.
The total quantity to be dispensed is 240 mL as stated by the doctor.
The sig says: take 2 teaspoonsful by mouth every 4 hours as needed
The patient will take 2 teaspoonsful six times daily, that is, the patient will take 12 teaspoonsful per day.
If 1 tsp = 5 mL, then 12 tsp = 60 mL
In turn, the total days supply will be 240 mL divided by 60 mL which is 4 days.
It is worth noting that Cheratussin AC syrup is classified as a C-V drug.
